Life in the Fast Lane an interview with Seth Moryson, for Entertainment Weekly
In the wake of Fox announcing that they have ordered an additional nine episodes of the highly promoted new show "Glee", giving it a full season, none could be more thrilled than the cast of the show. Of the cast, perhaps no one is more excited than Seth Moryson, who plays Finn Hudson- the jock-turned-musician. I sat down with Seth today to get his reaction to the news, and learn more about the charismatic new talent.
Entertainment Weekly: Were you surprised to hear that Glee was going to be extended to a full season? Seth Moryson: You know, not really. Before the show aired, we were all a little nervous as to how the show would be recieved, and whether or not it would live up to all the hype that Fox was trying to put out for the show. Now that a few episodes have been out, however, we've been getting a pretty good response. I just hope that keeps up!
EW: What has been your favorite part of working on the show? SM: Oh man, I don't know where I could even begin! [Laughs] I couldn't have dreamed of a more exciting role, and the cast of the show is such a blast to work with. It always makes a huge difference when you're surrounded not only by people you respect, but people who you really get along with, on a professional and personal level.
EW: You've been pretty vocal in how much you enjoy playing the role of Finn. Is there a reason, or do you just enjoy the character? SM: You know, Finn just reminds me a lot of myself. Even more than that, though, I think my favorite thing about the role is getting to combine three of my favorite things. Not only am I getting to act, I'm also getting to sing, AND play football from time to time. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get much better than that.
EW: I think people would be pretty surprised to know that you've actually been an "up and coming talent" before. Do you get people who recognize you for your past work, too? What's it like to be a newcomer again, eight years later? SM: It is so surreal. I was only seventeen when my band had our first big hit, and that sudden fame was such a shock. One day, I was struggling to pass chemistry, and the next week that same teacher that had been out to get me since the school year started was sucking up to me. I've had a lot of highs and lows since then, so it's slightly easier this time around. It does feel weird that it's like I'm new to the industry all over again, though. I don't know that a lot of people really realize that I'm the same person who sang and wrote one of the biggest songs of 2001, and honestly... I'm kind of okay with that.
EW: What was high school like for you? Do you have any plans to get your GED? SM: High school was a really strange time for me. My father left my family when I was in freshman year, just disappeared leaving only a note behind. That really set the tone for how I behaved in school, and it was always a fight with my mother because my grades were suffering. Music was my escape, so when the opportunity to actually focus on my music came along, I took it without hesitating. I don't regret doing that, but maybe some day I might go back and get my GED. Education is important, no matter what your dreams are.
EW: When After Sunset broke up, one of your former bandmates made a comment about how he resented you for dragging them out of school only to wind up being, according to him, one-hit wonders. SM: Most of us were teenagers, and at an uncertain time of our lives. None of us really could wrap our heads around everything that was going on, and I think that's part of what brought on the drama that caused the band to fall apart. Even if we could be considered one hit wonders, I don't regret a second of it. We got to tour the world! If he still resents me for that, then there's nothing I can really say about it.
EW: Okay, just a few quick questions to wrap this up. iPod or the radio? SM: iPod, definitely. I can't go anywhere without it.
EW: Football or hockey? SM: Oh now that's just mean. As much as I love football... I think I have to go with hockey for this one.
EW: Thank you for taking the time to talk with us, Seth! It's always a pleasure. Glee is on Fox on Wednesdays, at 9/8 central.
